The Wherry Albion
1960 , Broads (Norfolk)
Cat no. 140435
A wherryman discusses the life and the trade on board the last of the Norfolk wherries - the Wherry Albion.
A Norfolk wherryman, the last in a line of family members that occupied the role, speaks about the life of a typical wherryman, the goods transported, the problems this form of freight transport had to endure, and the pay and conditions of the job. He also relays anecdotes about the shenanigans of some of the men in the trade. The wherryman introduces the Wherry Albion, the last of the Norfolk wherries - a preservation project funded by the Norfolk Wherry Trust, that allows future generations to remember and understand the use of the sailing vessel. The wherryman and skipper’s mate raise the black sail on board the Norfolk Wherry Albion, taking the wherry and its young passengers for a journey on the Broads.
